What happens if a ball bearing goes out? It usually starts with noise. Then vibration. Then the motor draws more current as it fights the friction. Eventually the shaft can shift, and the rotor can contact the stator. At that point, you're not replacing a bearing. You're replacing a stator, an encoder, or the whole motor.

Repair or replace: scenario recommendations

The best choice depends on your situation. Here is how I think about it now:

  • Repair when the failure is isolated—bearing, seal, cable—and the motor is out of production or has a long lead time. Also repair when the repair shop can confirm the root cause and uses original or equivalent parts.
  • Replace when the shaft is bent or cracked, the motor has internal corrosion, encoder damage is uncertain, the mechanical issue upstream has not been fixed, or a replacement is in stock and can be delivered quickly.

Before you approve any repair, ask three things: Did you find why the original bearing failed? What parts will you use? What if the repair doesn't hold? Those answers will tell you more than any price quote.

A caveat from my desk

This process worked for us because we have predictable production shifts and a few good vendors nearby. If you're a seasonal business with demand spikes, the calculus might be different. If you're managing international logistics or legacy equipment, there are factors I'm not aware of.
